In addition to missile assaults on the country, a reportedly coordinated cyberattack on one of Ukraine’s power plants was also the source of blackouts that occurred there last year. The two-pronged power outage and data-wiping attack was carried out by Russia’s Sandworm crew, according to Mandiant’s threat intelligence team.
The Google-owned security company describes a hitherto undetected cyberattack on a Ukrainian power facility in research that is scheduled for publication today. The plant was breached in June of last year, and four months later, at the period of significant missile strikes on Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure, there was a two-day attack. Approximately one-third of the country lost electricity as a result of this.
