The data regulator in Britain is suing a “debt management company” for sending hundreds of thousands of text messages to homes that choose not to receive commercial junk mail.
Over the course of five and a half months ending in September 2021, Digivo Media Ltd, operating under the name Rid My Debt, sent out 415,000 SMS, as reported by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
The offensive messages encouraged recipients to visit the firm website in order to receive “free advice” and a “free pack.” However, since the recipients were TPS registered, Digivo Media was in violation of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). The business was fined £50,000 ($61,110) by the ICO.
